Have a question about membership?

Below are a few of the common questions we've received from the community. If you have a question which is not answered below, please contact us.

Q: What do member dues support?
A: Membership dues support NTBG’s operations – vital support for the core activities our staff must conduct to protect tropical plant biodiversity.

Your membership will help us:
  • rescue plants that might otherwise not survive and their habitats that are under threat
  • care for the plants in our gardens and preserves and create safe havens for them to flourish
  • study tropical species to learn more about them, their ecosystems, and how these enrich our lives
  • share what we learn -- for today, for tomorrow, for the future

Nearly one-third of the world’s plant species are at risk of extinction. The risk is even greater in the tropics. And it is these very places that hold the richest biodiversity on earth. NTBG is working to ensure these species are not lost forever. Enroll as a member today! Your decision now matters to our future.

Q: How do I become a member?
A: Becoming a member is easy, click here to select the membership level that's right for you, then just follow the on screen instructions. You may also call us to sign up over the phone: (808) 332-7324, ext. 246.

Q: How long does membership last?
A: All memberships are valid for one (1) calendar year from the date of enrollment.

Q: Are gift memberships available?
A: Yes – gifts of membership are a wonderful way to give a meaningful gift and also share the Garden with friends and family. Select the membership level you would like to give, and enter the recipient’s name and related information.

Q: How is being a member different than just visiting the gardens of NTBG?
A: A tour of any of NTBG's five stunning gardens is an experience that will long be remembered as a visitor or as a member. But when you become a member, you enable us to continue our crucial work and to share knowledge learned. Members’ dues help support the vital activities that make the difference in saving and understanding tropical plants, which are at the most risk of extinction. Perhaps the most rewarding benefit is knowing that you are directly helping to enrich life by perpetuating the protection of our precious tropical resources. We recommend you visit all of our gardens - each with its own unique combination of plant collections, climate and topography, natural and man-made features, culture and history.

Q: What if I lose my card?
A: Please contact our Membership Office at (808) 332-7324 ext. 246 or members@ntbg.org so we may issue you a new one. If you do not have your card at the time of your tour, please consult with our tour staff as you check-in for your tour.

Q: Can I visit the preserves on the Big Island?
A: No. Due to the remote locations of our preserves, they are not open to the public.

Preserves can be many things and serve a variety of purposes. Perhaps the most apt description in NTBG’s case is to view a preserve as a refuge for nature. This means first creating a safe haven for endemic species threatened by invasive plants and animals, and, sometimes, by real estate development. The next step is the active intervention by NTBG staff to improve the habitats by restoring the ecologies that sustain and preserve native plant communities. Preserves are a resource for the NTBG staff to develop and test conservation protocols in a range of ecosystems beyond those that exist in the gardens.

Q: Where are the gardens located?
A: At various locations in Hawaii and one in Florida. While other major gardens can grow tropical plants in greenhouses “under glass,” NTBG's nearly 1,800 acres of gardens and preserves afford a natural open-air environment in which these species flourish.
