National Tropical Botanical Garden Receives Local and National Recognition.
LIHUE, KAUA‘I (May 23, 2007) – Three prominent staff members of the National Tropical Botanical Garden (
NTBG) were honored this month by local and national organizations,
NTBG announced today. The Garden Club of America, Pacific Business News and Reader’s Digest have all recognized these individuals for their exceptional and lasting achievements.
Charles “Chipper” Wichman,
NTBG’s Director and CEO, has received The Garden Club of America’s prized Horticulture Award, an honor sponsored by The Garden Club of Honolulu. The only Hawai‘i recipient, Wichman was applauded for his outstanding service and contributions to the field of Horticulture.
Pacific Business News selected Janet Mayfield,
NTBG’s Chief Operating Officer/Chief Financial Officer, as a finalist for Businesswoman of the Year. Mayfield was chosen for her demonstrated leadership skills, strong business acumen, and contributions to the community.
Reader’s Digest featured
NTBG biologist Ken Wood in its May 2007 “Best of America” issue. Wood, the only winner from Hawai‘i, was named “best plant manager” for his contribution and dedication to saving threatened plant species, including his extraordinary work in helping to discover 50 new species in the Pacific.
“We could not be more pleased with the recognition of our team at National Tropical Botanical Garden. It means our efforts to preserve the Islands’ endangered plant species are not going unnoticed,” said Thomas Urban, Chairman of
NTBG’s Board of Trustees. “These awards acknowledge the incredible and vital work being done by the institution.”
Federally chartered by Congress in 1964 as a non-profit organization,
NTBG is comprised of a network of gardens and preserves, including
McBryde Garden,
Allerton Garden, and
Limahuli Garden and Preserve on the island of Kaua‘i;
Kahanu Garden on Maui;
The Kampong in Florida; and three preserves on the Big Island of Hawai‘i. With nearly 1,800 acres encompassing various tropical ecosystems, extensive living collections of endangered or at-risk species, and precious cultural and historical features,
