First Friday Goes “Green” With National Tropical Botanical Garden

September 7 Event to Feature X-peditions at rRed Elephant Café

Honolulu, Hawai‘i (August 15, 2007) – Downtown Honolulu’s monthly first Friday celebration is about to get a lot greener when the National Tropical Botanical Garden (NTBG) showcases some of its most captivating adventures during “X-peditions” at the rRed Elephant Café. The event will take place on Friday, September 7 from 6 – 10 p.m. at 1144 Bethel Street. Dangling from cliffs to save the last plant of its kind and journeying into remote Pacific Island villages are just a few of the stories Garden researchers will share. First Friday revelers will walk away knowing that a botanical garden like NTBG is a lot more exciting than one may think.

“We have lined up a very talented and impassioned group of individuals to share the many facets of the gardens. I invite everyone interested in the natural environment and the preservation of Hawaii’s precious resources to join us for the evening,” said Charles “Chipper” Wichman, CEO and Director of the non- profit institution. X-peditions will bring our gardens to Honolulu residents.”

The evening will feature:
  • Steve Perlman — rough-terrain and high-cliff field botanist
  • Mike DeMotta — native plants expert
  • Gaugau Tavana — educator, cultural advisor, Samoan chief

Each will give a short presentation and then invite questions from the audience. Information regarding membership in the NTBG will be on hand and all newly registered members will receive a special gift.
